This year, more than 700 LCPS students will wake up to a special gift on Christmas morning thanks to the collective efforts of local organizations, businesses, and community members who supported the district’s Wish Upon a Star initiative and other holiday programs. Of the 340 stars placed on the district’s Wish Upon a Star Tree, NASA sponsored 40 stars, recently collecting them, purchasing holiday gifts, and delivering more than 40 wrapped presents to the LCPS Federal Programs Department. These gifts will benefit students enrolled in the Migrant Education Program, families supported through Bilingual Community Outreach, and Community Schools.

LCPS also recognizes the many additional community contributions that made this season of giving possible, including:

• Slow and Low Car Club of Las Cruces, which donated approximately 100 toys

• First Light Federal Credit Union, which provided 120 gifts and all food for the Migrant Posada

• Toys for Tots, which donated 100 gifts

• Local community members Mr. and Mrs. Hernandez, who sponsored 20 students and donated additional items for raffles at the posada

• Las Cruces Association of Educator Retirees, which sponsored a McKinney-Vento family with four children

LCPS also recognizes the Las Cruces Public Schools Foundation for its continued partnership and collaboration with First American Bank throughout the holiday fundraising season. Their efforts help support teacher grants and student scholarships, expanding educational opportunities for LCPS students.

Holiday support also included a major community shopping event known as “Cops & Kids,” led by the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 8 and Walmart. Alongside more than 200 volunteers from law enforcement agencies across southern New Mexico, the organizations provided a holiday shopping experience for over 400 students from all school districts in Doña Ana County, including 300 LCPS students, at the Walmart on Rinconada Boulevard.

In addition, this month Safe Routes to School partnered with Southwest Disposal of Las Cruces to assemble 178 bicycles for second- and third-grade LCPS students who won a district writing contest. Southwest Disposal raised $5,500 for the initiative, and their corporate office generously matched the donation, making it possible to purchase all the bicycles.
