February is Black History Month! We are kicking the month off by recognizing the great Clara Belle Williams who lived, studied and worked in Las Cruces. Williams was the first African-American graduate of the New Mexico College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (now NMSU) in 1937. After graduation, Williams taught at the Booker T. Washington School in Las Cruces for twenty-seven years before retiring and moving to Chicago in 1951 to join her sons who had opened a medical clinic. A pictured plaque of Williams is on display on the Legacy Wall at the Las Cruces Public Schools Dr. Karen M. Trujillo Administration Complex. The plaque honors Clara Belle Williams, recognizing her establishment of Booker T. Washington Elementary School, calling her a pioneer in education.

Hi All, Student applications for the NMSU afterschool program were sent out yesterday. Placement is a first come, first serve basis. Each program is capped at 15 students. Deadline to apply is January 21st. Please fill out all 3 pages of the application and make sure to choose a program for Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday or the student can opt to do all 4 days if there are programs available to participate in. Incomplete applications will be returned to be completed. Students cannot be placed into a program without a completed application. Dinner will be provided for students prior to the program beginning daily. Recap: Afterschool program begins on January 24th from 2:30 to 4:30. The deadline to apply is January 21st. This term all students must stay for the entire program if enrolled, Monday through Thursday hours of 2:30 to 4:30. Part-time attendance or early release cannot be accommodated this term, no exceptions. Please reach out with any questions. Thank you for your time!

Hello Valley View Community, Just a friendly reminder that student drop-off begins at 7:45 at the roundabout. We are noting/experiencing an over abundance of tardies between 8:00 to 9:00 and thereafter. It is important that students arrive at 7:45 to 8:00, at the latest, so their temperature can be taken and they can participate in receiving their breakfast and morning jumpstart activity and not miss out on any morning instruction. If students should arrive late they cannot be dropped off in front of the school and escort themselves to the front door. For safety concerns, we ask if you could please escort your child to the front door to sign them in with the front office, get them temped and receive their tardy slips prior to being escorted to class. Please note that dismissal is at 2:30. No early release of students unless front office is notified well in advance of an early pick-up and the time they will be picked up. Dear LCPS Families, Las Cruces Public Schools has become aware of a troubling post that has been shared widely this week on the social media platform TikTok. The post refers to a threat to school safety “for every school in the USA, even elementary,” on Friday, December 17. The post appears to be part of a national TikTok trend and did not originate in our school district. We have heard reports from other districts that the same post is circulating in their schools. While we do not believe the threat to be credible, we are closely monitoring the situation and taking it seriously. Additionally, the district has been in contact with the Las Cruces Police Department regarding the post. We may have an increased police presence in our buildings on Friday as an added precaution. This situation serves as a good example of why it is important to avoid sharing posts online that refer to school safety threats. Even if they are not credible threats, they can cause a great deal of stress and anxiety for our students, families, and staff. We ask our families to monitor their children’s social media activity and speak with them about proper behavior online. If you or your child become aware of any potential threat posted to social media or anywhere else, please notify a school staff member or trusted adult right away.
